Questions to Ask When Buying a Camper Trailer

While being a new camper trailer is an exciting experience, it can come with many questions and caveats that might prove to be overwhelming, especially if this is your first camper purchase. That’s why it pays to do your research when looking at camper trailers for sale and make sure you’re asking only the essential questions in order to narrow down your decision as much as possible.

While your budget, the size of your family and the type of trips you’ll be taking are all important considerations, there are a few more crucial factors to keep in mind to ensure you’re making the best purchase decision. Here are a few questions you should always ask when buying a new camper trailer.

What Exactly is Included in the Purchase?

While plenty of businesses selling camper trailers online can make great sales pitches to draw you in, the reality of seeing your prospective camper trailer in person can differ wildly from what was advertised. When viewing camper trailers for sale, ask the salesperson or business point of contact exactly what is included in the sale. While you can safely assume most new camper trailer purchases will include a warranty of some kind, it’s still important to ask. Furthermore, getting a rundown of what you’re actually buying gives you a chance to compare the features and extras included with the camper trailer in question against your own list of wants and needs. While the purchase of a camper may seem relatively straightforward, it’s better to be safe than sorry.

What is the Towing or Ball Weight of the Camper?

If you purchase a camper with a weight that’s incompatible with your towing vehicle, you won’t be able to get very far. Arguably the most critical question to ask when inspecting camper trailers for sale is how much the total weight is and whether your towing vehicle will be able to tow it safely.

Make sure to bring a copy of the manual of your towing vehicle or write down its maximum towing capacity beforehand. The seller should be able to give you an indication of whether the prospective camper trailer can be towed with what you have.

If Buying Used, is There a Service History or Log Included?

Buying on the second-hand market can be risky, especially for such a big purchase. A good way to gauge a seller’s credibility is to check if they can provide any kind of service history log or a record of any faults or quirks the camper might have. This is important, as it will also give you an indication of the overall condition of the camper trailer and whether any major maintenance is due. Having an idea of the used condition of bedding, storage and electricals will also give you greater peace of mind once you’re out on the open road. When buying on the second-hand market, it’s unlikely the camper will be without faults at all (either aesthetically or internally), but knowing ahead of time means you’ll be able to confidently proceed with the purchase or back out as needed.
